Sports Science School - Eagle Ridge

Sports Science was originally introduced in 2005 as an extra subject and The Wykeham Collegiate continues to be one of the only schools in South Africa to offer this subject.

Sport & Exercise Science has now become an officially recognised IEB Grade 12 subject. Girls are able to elect to do it as part of their subject offering for their Grade 12 Senior Certificate when they select their Grade 12 subjects. They must also select either Life Science or Physical Science if they do Sport & Exercise Science.  Apart from the academic requirements of the course, the girls can also become qualified coaches in several sports offered at The Wykeham Collegiate including:

  • A ‘Learn to Swim’ Course, through Swim SA, to qualify as a Swimming Coach,
  • Basketball, Hockey, Netball and Tennis Coaching Certificates,
  • First Aid Courses,
  • Strapping Courses,
  • And many more Sports related courses.

Girls, together with qualified coaches, assist in the coaching of primary school pupils in order to gain experience in coaching skills.
